Nagasaki in December 2016 London 9th August 2017

Nagasaki The Hypocentre Memorial

In December 2016 I had the opportunity to visit Nagasaki during my trip to Japan. It is a city that has returned from total devastation Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum and is a thriving and beautiful city again  Nagasaki . With its history of disaster and resilience it gives a stark warning for the present and hope for the future.

On August 6th and today August 9th in London I wear my red Peace Nagasaki T-shirt with pride. The two dates in the calendar that year on year are a stark reminder of not only the devastation of ‘conventional’ war but the holocaust of nuclear war. When I turn on the radio and log on to my laptop early this morning I hear and read the headlines about the latest threats from North Korea and United States. Leader Kim considering a missile strike on the US Pacific territory of Guam after president Trump warned that threats from the North Korean regime would be met with “fire and fury, frankly power that the world has never seen”.  Two men in the wrong places and too alike for a safe world.

On the morning of the 72nd anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Nagasaki I ask is there enough time; will and clarity in thinking to turn at a constructive junction and try a different path?

By coincidence it is also the 10th anniversary of the beginning of the global banking and universal financial crises are causing refreshed and continued concerns.

Recently when asked what I wished for I responded – that as much money, influence and power was spent on peace and reconciliation as is spent on war and killing. Then perhaps future generations can achieve what has not yet been achievable, namely a peaceful world.
