“Result is about outcome – potential and the bottom line”

So, what is the potential of Donald Trump becoming the next president of the United States?

A year ago, if anyone had asked me and I suppose the majority of many if Donald Trump would be the front runner for the Republican president nominees you would have been met with either a big laughter or a bewildered look. That depending on how much the respondent knew about the man in question, how much attention and interest they paid to North American politics in general and presidential elections in particular. Today I suspect the majority of respondents would know and have a picture and opinion about mister or should I say master Trump. Because he certainly is a master on self-promotion and a simple, emotional message that has the ability to convince without any further questions asked. Or reality checks on competence and capability needed in how to turn promise into result.

I can’t even remember how Donald Trump’s campaign began. Today it is with a mixture of astonishment and fear I watch, listen to and read about this man’s achievement in a few months’ time. So far the prediction of his demise because of sense and sensibility in people has had the absolute opposite effect. Pulling out of a Fox Television debate and staging his own event gave I suspect more publicity than had he been part of the debate. A message perhaps of being his own man and not pushed around. After losing in Iowa Donald Trump and his entourage quickly learned one of their weak points were being experienced only as a fun celebrity party offer. That was not enough to become the winner. So they made sure knocking on electorate’s doors, doing the footwork and talking directly with potential voters became part of the campaign strategy, tactic and action. How much that added to the success in New Hampshire might be difficult to know but I am sure it meant more people did use their democratic right to have their voice and vote counted. Now that the campaign moves on to wider territory I believe there are many who bewildered and more anxiously than with a laugh will watch the outcome of part one on the road to the White House – the nomination of the Republican presidential candidate. What just a few months ago seemed more of a joke might today be a serious proposition. That is the possibility of Donald Trump holding the momentum in becoming the elected Republican nominee.

It is easy to have a laugh and label Trump supporters stupid. It is more difficult to take on board why people like you and I are prepared to believe an individual with no political experience, offensive behaviour, language and action program is the best and only presidential choice. If we believe in equality, diplomacy and an integrated world how will we initiate and continue a fruitful dialogue with Trump supporters and their fellows around the globe? Is there potential for listening, change and being respected for equal value however diverse we are?
